After successfully breaking four consecutive world records, and placing in the Top 2 for Best Campus Food from the Princeton Review, the University of Massachusetts Amherst Dining Services is raising the bar once again by toppling another record - the World’s Largest New England Clam Bake! On Labor Day, September 1, 2014, UMass Dining will attempt to serve over 3,000 people and set their fifth record recognized by Guinness World Records!
This event will take place in conjunction with our 'Welcome to UMass Amherst' zero-waste Green Barbecue, where UMass Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy will welcome back 28,000 students to campus for the fall semester.
The food from the clam bake will include Massachusetts lobster, littleneck clams, steamers, corn on the cob and white creamer potatoes provided by Hadley farmers. The food will be made to order, and utensils, plate ware, and shells will be composted making this a zero-waste event. The event will be led by: UMass Executive Chef Willie Sng; UMass Chef de Cuisines Robert Bankert, Anthony Jung, and Matthias Accurso; Residential Dining Director Garett DiStefano; Auxiliary Enterprises Director of Purchasing and Marketing Christopher Howland; and hundreds of volunteers.
Our goals for attempting this Guinness World Record are to support the resiliency of the New England food system by using as much locally sourced food as possible, promote sustainability and healthy eating, showcase regional cuisine and build community.
As always, this year’s special event is made possible entirely by the generous donations of our vendors.
Please join UMass Dining and the entire UMass Amherst community September 1, 2014 from 3pm to 7pm as we work together to break yet another Guinness World Record!
